(Ottawa, ON – July 13, 2010) Kristina Laforge (Alma, QC), Tory Nyhaug-Heinonen (Coquitlam, BC), Steve Noble (Glencairn, ON) and Stuart Wight (Moncton, NB) have been nominated by the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) to the Canadian Youth Olympic Team to represent Canada in the cycling events at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from August 14 to 26, 2010.

“These four riders will make Canada proud at this major international event for youth. We have selected across three cycling sports the best of the crop in Canadian junior cycling to represent our nation, and they are focused on winning medals for Canada,” said Jacques Landry, Chief Technical Officer for the Canadian Cyclist Association

“The Youth Olympic Games will be a great window to showcase our top junior athletes to the world, and introduce them to elite, high performance multi-sport Games.”

Cycling is divided into four main events for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games: BMX, Mountain Bike, Road Race and Time Trial.

Each team consists of three Junior Men and one Junior Woman, with the three Junior Men required to compete in two disciplines each (BMX, MTB, Road Race and Road Race Time Trial) while the Junior Woman has to compete in all three disciplines (BMX, MTB and Time Trial). All male riders also have to compete in the Road Race.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will host 5,000 athletes and officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees, along with an estimated 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and more than 320,000 spectators.

Athletes, between 14 and 18 years old, will compete in a total of 26 sports and take part in a Culture and Education Programme.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games aims to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.
