SPRINT

In a sprint two or more competitors cover 1,000 meters but only the final 200 meters are timed. The first one across the finish line is the winner. At the beginning of the race riders pedal slowly, carefully watching one another waiting for an opening to strike. The race demands more tactical skill than any other cycling event. Competitors progress through a series of heats leading to a final head-to-head confrontation between the top two riders for first place.

KILOMETER

Dubbed "killermeter", the cyclist races alone against the clock from a standing start. A maximum effort of 60 to 80 seconds is required. The rider with the fastest time wins.

500 METERS

The 500 meters is a new women's event at the World Championship, it operates under the same conditions as the men's kilometer.

INDIVIDUAL PURSUIT

Two riders begin pedaling from a standing start on opposite sides of the track, "pursuing" one another until one is caught or the distance is completed. If one cyclist does not overtake or catch the other rider the cyclist with the fastest time is declared the winner. Distances raced include 2000 meters for junior women, 3000 meters for senior women and junior men, 4000 meters for senior men.

TEAM PURSUIT

The rules in team pursuit are the same as in individual pursuit except that teams of four riders compete against one another. The time of each team's third rider is used to determine placing. The team pursuit event calls for precision teamwork each rider takes a turn in the lead breaking the wind before swinging up to the top of the banked track and dropping down to the tail of the team for a brief rest.

POINT RACE

Point Races are 50 kilometers mass start events with sprints for points each 5 kilometers. The winner is the one covering the distance with the most points or the one who has lapped the field.

OLYMPIC SPRINT

The format of this event is similar to the Team Pursuit. The teams are comprised of three riders and each of them must lead the team on one lap before dropping out of the race. The winning team is the one who completes the distance first. Olympic Track Events: The Olympic track events consist of the sprint, 1 kilometer, 4000 and 3000 meter individual pursuit, 4000 meter team pursuit and point race.
